HarmFree™ Imagery - Ethical Visuals for Modern Brands

HarmFree™ Imagery is our ethical standard for photography and advertising. We help brands create visuals that avoid gratuitous nudity or suggestiveness - reducing harm, building trust, and keeping the focus where it belongs: on your product and your story.

Why HarmFree™ Exists

Modern advertising often uses nudity or sexual suggestiveness in situations where it’s irrelevant to the product, reducing people - usually women, to their bodies. This approach shifts the focus from the brand’s story to physical appearance, feeding unrealistic ideals and contributing to issues like self-objectification, anxiety, and reduced trust in the brand.

What We Mean by HarmFree™

HarmFree™ Imagery is built on a simple principle: no gratuitous nudity, no unnecessary suggestiveness. We define nudity as wearing less clothing than is customary for the setting, and suggestiveness as poses, expressions, or contexts that imply sexual availability or objectification when it’s not relevant to the product being advertised.

It's a protocol designed by Brendan Creaser, Director of Bohemia Bay studio.

Why It Matters for Brands

Choosing HarmFree™ standards means creating images that work harder for your brand - building trust, resonating with your audience, and focusing on your product instead of relying on shock value.

  • Provocative images may grab quick attention, but they rarely create lasting engagement or sales.
  • When brands align imagery with their true values, they connect more deeply with their audience.

How We Apply HarmFree™ Now

We’re still developing the full HarmFree™ protocol, but the principles already guide every shoot at Bohemia Bay Studio. We work with brands who want to avoid harmful imagery, applying our standards from concept to final image.

  • Every shoot is assessed for relevance, is the imagery telling the brand’s story?
  • We provide guidance and online consultations for businesses wanting to explore ethical imagery with their chosen creatives.

The HarmFree™ Checklist

A simple framework we use before, during, and after each shoot:

  • Nudity Assessment – Is attire appropriate for the setting and necessary for the product?
  • Suggestiveness Evaluation – Does the pose, gaze, or context imply sexual availability unnecessarily?
  • Intent & Message Is the imagery aligned with the brand’s story or just using sex to grab attention?

This checklist keeps every creative choice aligned with your brand’s values and audience trust.

The Impact We’re Aiming For

Our goal is to give any brand or creative team the knowledge to avoid harmful imagery whether they work in our studio or not. By promoting HarmFree™, we aim to:

  • Keep brand messaging relevant and respectful.
  • Help content connect on a deeper, more authentic level.
  • Reduce the mental health harms caused by sexualised advertising.

We want to prove brands can thrive without relying on harmful imagery.

Be Part of the Shift

We’re inviting freelancers, brands, and marketers to join us in building the HarmFree™ standard. Whether you’re curious, ready to integrate it into your shoots, or simply want to learn more, we’d love to connect.

I couldn't recommend this studio more, and can't wait to be back!"
